The American Legion William Brandon Dawson Post 34 is dedicated to serving veterans and the Tunica County community. Under the command of Commander Larry D. Williams, the Post 34 American Legion aims to acknowledge all veterans within the community and beyond, providing brotherhood and sisterhood, resources for VA benefits, and support for all those who have given their life in service of this county.
On September 24, 2010, Private First-Class William B. Dawson, 20, of Tunica, Mississippi, died of wounds suffered while traveling between Ghanzi and Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, when his military vehicle was attacked with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, U.S. Army, Alaska, Fort Richardson, Alaska. He was the son of the Rev. Willie Dawson and Ouita Weeden Dawson.
In 2015, Larry Williams (United States Army/Vietnam Veteran), PFC Dawson's uncle, established the PFC William Brandon Dawson Post 34 American Legion bringing together local veterans in Tunica County.
Since its inception, the PFC WBD Post 34 American Legion has given back to the community in a variety of ways. Hosting annual Christmas events, providing toys, monetary donations and essentials to in-need families, as well as giving back to the community and other veterans during memorial events and community functions.
The Private First-Class William Brandon Dawson Post 34 American Legion, under the Command of Commander Larry D. Williams, sought to acknowledge all veterans within the community and beyond, providing brother and sisterhood, resources for VA Benefits and support for all those who have given their life in service of this county. The Post 34 American Legion is an inclusive veteran's organization, which follows the guidelines and bylaws of the United States American Legion; requiring that all veterans meet the standards of entry and association.
PFC William Brandon Dawson gave his life for his entire country and its allies. Post 34 will continue to serve that same capacity.
